personality:

The first thing that anyone needs to know about Anya is that she’s not human. Now, I don’t just mean it in the literal sense, but also in the way that she doesn’t quite get the whole common decency, common courtesy, common… anything, really. This is a girl whose idea of a great first date was to talk about some of the men that she’s maimed and killed over years. Now… I know that you might be thinking… if you’d been a demon for nearly a thousand years, you’d be a little rusty with social graces too. But, even as a human, she was lacking in tact (as shown in Selfless). Being a vengeance demon for over a thousand years did nothing at all to help this.

All right. To give her credit, the whole “listen to me talk about my vengeance glory days while I attempt to woo you” was only her third appearance in the series. Surely her social graces have improved somewhat since then?

Well… maybe this is true to some extent. As the series progresses, she does talk less about her former demon days (though she won’t hesitate to bring up amusing anecdotes when the mood suits her). She also finds happiness and love with Xander Harris (at least for a time, but more about that later) and comes to more than appreciate the Free Market and Capitalism (capitalized for how important they are). And I mean she really appreciates capitalism and money (she also proves to be surprisingly decent with working modern technology…or at least trading stocks online). And she’s not really even all that comfortable with the idea of killing people anymore. A fair deal of her character arc in early season 7 is about this.

Seeing as I’m apping her from late season 6, she hasn’t quite come to the realization that she cannot do her vengeance job as easily as she once did. However, her conscience is definitely there.

But she remains as socially inept and ignorant of what most people would take for granted. But hey, everyone has his or her own little quirks, don’t they?

She’s also extremely uncomfortable with the idea of death, as evidenced by both her reaction to being injured in Season 5’s The Replacement and the death of Buffy’s mother in The Body. Again, this can be attributed to the fact that as a demon, she never really had to worry about mortality.

It’s also important to know that Anya can be quite vengeful. Yeah, I know you wouldn’t expect that from a Vengeance Demon, now would you? This is especially important due to the canon point that she was taken from. Having just been left at the altar by her boyfriend of more than two years, she wants nothing more than to see him suffer in any way possible. She shows her hurt through bitterness and spite, as evidenced when the two of them talk in the penultimate episode of Season 6:

ANYA: I care if you live or die, Xander. I'm just not sure which one I want.
XANDER: Again with the comfort. Look, we both know things might get ugly at, uh, Wiccapalooza. And if it gets really bad...
ANYA: (still not looking at him) Let me guess. You'll propose?
XANDER: I need to know if you're gonna turn on me. Use this little shindig as an excuse for some sweet revenge.
ANYA: There is nothing in this world that could give me greater or more lasting satisfaction than to reap bloody vengeance upon you, Xander Harris. But I can't. Not officially, not magically. So smile, it's your lucky day. You got away with it, I can't hurt you.

(6.21, Two to Go)

You might also not mention bunnies around her… She’s terrified of them. Don’t ask.

So, Anya isn’t human. But, that doesn’t mean that she’s evil. Maybe she used to be, but those days are behind her… for the most part. Despite all of the vengeance and tactlessness, she will eventually do the right thing. Just don’t expect much fluff or bunnies.

Never expect any bunnies.

why do you feel this character would be appropriate to the setting?
